Key West City Buys $$ Quarter Million Dollars Worth of GRASS!

Clearly Someone is Smoking Something!

I hate being late to a good party, seems like you always miss something.  But that is how I feel right now having recently found out that Key West just burned through a cool $236,000 placing new grass on City baseball and softball fields.  That's grass.  As in sod...stuff you step on.  To make matters worse, expensive sod requires lots of water to protect the investment.  Water is expensive, and something we are supposed to be trying to conserve.  Well watered expensive grass requires frequent mowing and meticulous care.

How did I miss the fact that we were suffering from such inadequate grass?  I missed the headline that read "Yet Another Ten Year Old Shortstop Tragically Loses Incisor to Bad Hop Caused by Dastardly Dandelion."  No, not one sane person can even try to give me the "it's all about the children" teary eyed speech over this one.  Not when we hear rhetoric at a recent City Commission meeting about trying to find creative ways to cover the over $6 Million dollars we owe to FEMA because of some other previous stooge type blunder by City leaders.
You know, the ones we pay six figure incomes to because we need the best and the brightest.  A great portion of this SIX MILLION dollars will more than likely be borrowed, so as not to induce the true pain of the fiasco upon taxpayers.  That's an awesome solution.  If we really cared about the children we wouldn't be saddling them with debt every possible chance we get.

This is what it's all about folks.  Politicians at all levels of government have become used to this gold plated delivery system to appease voters to ensure they have a support base, regardless of the true cost.  Then they find a way to disperse the pain, and sell you the "small" increase in a fee or tax.  You know the 'ol "this will only cost the average person the price of a soda a day" sales pitch.  I remember hearing that from the guy in plaid who was trying to get me to buy a Yugo back in '85.

We all need to change our expectations of what we expect government to provide.  We need to reward politicians that are willing to make tough choices while being honest as to why they have to, instead of rewarding the smiling clown that wants to give you back some of your own money in an indirect fashion and act like he's doing you a favor.

As a side thought, I wonder what David Fernandez would do if I limed an outfield or two with "Who is the jackwagon that just wasted a quarter of a million dollars on turf?"  I can see it now, victimized City officials would be leaving anonymous web complaints with code enforcement, KWPD would be reviewing web cam footage, paint would need to be purchased, citations issued, you know end of times type of stuff.  The usual.
